The Palace of Holyroodhouse, also known as Holyrood Palace. Is located at the foot of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and serves as the official Scottish residence of the British monarch. This grand building has been central to Scotland’s Royal history for centuries and remains one of Edinburgh’s most visited landmarks.
Holyroodhouse was originally founded as an Augustinian Abbey in 1128 by King David I, the site developed into a Royal Palace over time. The current structure dates mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries and has been home to many monarchs, including the famously tragic Mary, Queen of Scots. Her former chambers can still be visited today, giving insight into her dramatic reign and the political intrigue of the time.
The Palace is still used by the Royal Family when they are in Scotland. During Royal Week, his Majesty the King hosts official events, such as the Royal Garden Party, which is held in beautifully manicured gardens.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is open to the public when it is not in official use. Visitors to the Palace can explore the following areas. The state apartments, the Throne Room, the Great Gallery, and Mary Queen of Scots’ chambers. The ruins of Holyrood Abbey and the landscaped Palace gardens. Next door is The King’s Gallery, which hosts changing exhibitions of artwork and treasures from the Royal Collection.
After touring the Palace, guests can enjoy The Café at the Palace, which serves fresh, locally sourced food, light lunches, and traditional afternoon tea. The Palace Shop offers a great selection of Royal Collection memorabilia.
The Palace is located at the bottom of the famous Royal Mile, making it an enjoyable walk from Edinburgh’s Old Town.
