The Edinburgh Playhouse opened its doors on August 12, 1929. Designed by architect John Fairweather, inspired by the Roxy Cinema in New York. Edinburgh Playhouse originally opened as a cinema, screening films for several decades. In the early 1970s, it faced closure and potential demolition. However, a successful public campaign led to its preservation, and by 1980, it became a live performance venue.

With a seating capacity of 3,059, it is the largest non-sporting theatre in the UK, accommodating audiences across three levels.

The Playhouse has hosted numerous renowned productions, such as "The Phantom of the Opera," "Les Misérables," "Cats," and "Mamma Mia!" Its stage continues to welcome a diverse array of performances, from West End musicals to concerts and comedy acts. Tickets can be purchased through the official website or at the Edinburgh Playhouse Box Office.

During the Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe Festival, the Playhouse serves as a key venue, hosting various performances that attract audiences from around the world.

Situated at 18-22 Greenside Place, the theatre is near the city centre, making it easily accessible for those heading to the Playhouse. A short walk from Edinburgh's Waverly Station or the Edinburgh Trams Line. Edinburgh bus station is also a short five minute from the Playhouse. Car parking is available under the nearby Omni centre.
