OVO Hydro – Glasgow's Premier Live Entertainment Venue

The OVO Hydro has become one of Glasgow's most recognisable modern landmarks and one of Scotland's leading destinations for live entertainment.

Located on the banks of the River Clyde at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), the arena hosts everything from world-class concerts and comedy shows to major sporting and entertainment events.

Opened in September 2013 with a headline performance by Rod Stewart, the OVO Hydro has quickly become a cultural hub for the city. Formerly known as the SSE Hydro, it is now regarded as one of the world's busiest entertainment arenas.

Architecture and Design

The OVO Hydro was designed by the internationally renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners and is instantly recognisable for its striking dome-shaped design. The exterior is made from translucent ETFE cushions, a material originally developed for the space industry, which allows natural daylight to filter inside while giving the arena its iconic glow after dark.

This distinctive design of the OVO Hydro has made it a standout, looking incredibly cool when illuminated at night.

Capacity and Facilities

With a maximum capacity of 14,300, the OVO Hydro is the largest entertainment venue in Scotland. Its flexible seating layout and cutting-edge sound and lighting systems make it a favourite stop for international touring artists and major productions.

The venue now regularly ranks among the world's top 10 busiest arenas, according to Pollstar. Reflecting its packed events calendar and global appeal for stars to perform in Glasgow.

The design features multiple levels for food and drink, accessible seating, the Hydro Club, and facilities designed to accommodate large crowds.

Notable Events at the OVO Hydro

Since opening, the OVO Hydro has hosted an impressive lineup of global stars, including Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and the comedy legend that is Peter Kay. The Hoolie at the Hydro has become a popular Scottish music event.
