The West Sands, St Andrews

Stretching nearly two miles along the North Sea, West Sands Beach in St Andrews is a breathtaking expanse of golden sand backed by rolling dunes and the iconic St Andrews Links golf courses. Just a 15-minute walk from the town centre, this beach offers a serene escape.

The West Sands gained international fame as the filming location for the opening scene of the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. A moment that was later honoured during the 2012 London Olympics torch relay, which was part of the 70-day relay across the UK, cementing the beach's place in cultural history.

The beach is popular spot for walking, jogging, and swimming (on a good day) with separate zones ensuring safety for all visitors. During the summer months, lifeguards are stationed at the beach, making it an extremely safe space. Wheelchair rental is available, promoting inclusivity. 

Environmental Importance

The adjacent sand dunes are part of the Eden Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the Firth of Tay and Eden Estuary Special Area of Conservation (SAC), highlighting the area's ecological value.

  • R&A World Golf Museum: Located near the beach, this museum chronicles the history of golf, celebrating St Andrews' status as the "Home of Golf."

Facilities at the West Sands

Car Parking

Car parking is free when parking down by the beach, with plenty of spaces available. If you choose to park in the car park on your right, just after passing the golf museum. Please note that it is a paid car park.

Toilets

The toilets are open daily. As you approach the beach parking, you will see them on your left.

Food and Drink

Available from the Dook Cafe on the West Sands.

Chariots of Fire Beach Race

This annual event is becoming increasingly popular each year, with all 800 spots selling out for the 2025 race. Where the West Sands of St Andrews transforms into a living homage to the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. The main race is a 5km beach run out and back along the beach. Many of the runners participating choose to wear white. Children can participate in the event, which starts earlier than the main race.
