The Bridge to Nowhere, Dunbar

On the golden sands of Belhaven Bay in Dunbar stands one of Scotland’s quirkiest landmarks, the “Bridge to Nowhere.” At first glance, this footbridge appears oddly stranded in the middle of the beach. When the tide is out, it looks like it leads nowhere. As the tide rolls in, the bridge takes on its true purpose, arching gracefully across the flooded Biel Water.

History of the Bridge

The bridge was built to help walkers cross the Biel Water, which flows into the North Sea at Belhaven Bay. The Biel Water runs from the Luggate Burn through Biel and onto Belhaven Bay.  When the tide is out, the bridge stands as a lonely figure on Belhaven Beach. As the tide comes in, the beach around the bridge quickly fills up, isolating the bridge as pictured. Its unusual appearance has earned it worldwide recognition and an attraction many want to see when visiting Dunbar.
