Xplore Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan's history dates back to the 13th century when clan members constructed the castle as a defensive stronghold against Viking invasions. Over the centuries, the Castle developed, becoming a key fortress for the Clan Mackenzie and their allies, the Clan MacRae.

During the Jacobite Rising in 1719, British naval forces largely destroyed the castle. It remained in ruins for nearly 200 years before being restored in the early 20th century by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap. The reconstruction of Eilean Donan Castle was completed in 1932. Transforming Eilean Donan into the breathtaking Castle that stands today. Visitors can buy tickets to explore the Castle, with most rooms accessible. From its period furnishings to historical artefacts and weapon displays, the tour guides will share their incredible knowledge on your journey around the Castle.

The iconic stone bridge leading to the Castle enhances the Castle's fairy-tale appearance. The current version of the bridge is the fourth edition, built as part of the Castle's reconstruction. Visitors to the Castle walk across the bridge to reach the castle entrance, enjoying panoramic views of the three lochs. Before the bridge existed, people could only reach the castle by boat.

The visitor centre is where you can purchase tickets for the Castle, with a gift shop and cafe. The cafe offers an array of food with freshly made sandwiches and other homemade products. The Conchra Charitable Trust manages the Castle.

Eilean Donan Castle is located near Dornie, on the A87 road connecting the mainland to the Isle of Skye. It is approximately 9 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh and 73 miles from Inverness. The Castle is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the visitor centre.
