Dumfries is a town located on the banks of the River Nith and is the biggest town in the South West of Scotland. It has held the status of a Royal Burgh since 1186, though it is believed there was a settlement and port in the area even during the Roman times. Dumfries is widely known for its numerous associations with Robert Burns, who lived here during the 1790s. The 18th-century watermill, Robert Burns Centre, is situated here and narrates the story of Burns’ final years in the town. Dumfries has a diverse range of shops, restaurants and accommodation options, making it a favourite destination of those visiting this part of Scotland. Moreover, it is easily accessible with the border to England located only around 30 miles away. Dumfries is also a great base to head off and explore the Solway Firth.
