What to Expect at the Edinburgh Christmas Markets

Traditional Christmas Market - East Princes Street

Wander through rows of wooden stalls in East Princes Street Gardens, offering everything from handmade decorations and winter accessories to local products. This is the main Christmas Market. There's also no shortage of food, from German bratwurst to loaded fries, locally made pies, pancakes, crepes and Scottish festive favourites, we even tried Nutella honey!! Before enjoying the big wheel, or for the more adventurous person, you can head up on the around-the-world Starflyer.

Rides and Festive Attractions - West Princes Street Gardens

In West Princes Street Gardens, beside the stunning Ross Fountain, you will find a very different feel, with family fun, lots of rides, and amusements for all ages. With the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

Tips for Visiting the Markets

  • Busy Times The markets are busy most of the time. We visited during the day and early evening, and there wasn't much difference. Weekends are busier than during the week. There is something about visiting the markets at night, when the city comes alive with light.
  • Dress warmly, as Edinburgh can be bitterly cold and windy in winter.
  • Ride the big wheel for amazing views of the city.
  • Visit West Princes Street Gardens and have some fun on the rides.
  • Explore nearby attractions such as the Scott Monument, the Royal Mile, and Edinburgh Castle.
