Glasgow Queen Street is one of the city’s two main railway stations and serves as a vital transport hub for travellers heading north through Scotland and east to Edinburgh.
Located just off George Square, it sits in the heart of the city centre, moments from Buchanan Street and the Subway. Following a major £120 million redevelopment, the Station now blends its historic features with modern design, offering improved facilities and a bright, spacious concourse.
The Station first opened in 1842 as part of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, originally known as Dundas Street Station. In 1878, the dramatic, curved roof that remains visible today was added, becoming a signature feature of the Station’s appearance.
Queen Street’s low-level platforms, which run underneath the main Station, opened in 1886 as part of the Glasgow City and District Railway. Over the years, the Station has undergone various upgrades, the most significant of which was in 2021.
As part of the EGIP (Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme), Queen Street Station underwent a major transformation between 2017 and 2021. The concourse was expanded, the platforms lengthened to accommodate longer electric trains and a dramatic new glass-fronted entrance was added. Giving the Station a dramatic visual appeal from George Square.
