Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of Glasgow's most iconic cultural attractions in the heart of the city's West End. The Gallery and Museum opened in 1901. The grand red sandstone building overlooks Kelvingrove Park and has welcomed millions of visitors over the years. With its stunning architecture and diverse collections, it offers something for everyone.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is free to enter and is home to over 8,000 objects displayed across 22 themed galleries. One of the most famous pieces in its collection is "Christ of Saint John of the Cross by Salvador Dalí," which draws visitors from around the world. The museum also houses an impressive selection of arms and armour, natural history exhibits, and artefacts from ancient Egypt. For younger visitors, interactive displays and hands-on exhibits make learning fun. In the west court, a Spitfire plane hangs from the roof.
The building itself is worth a visit even before you step inside. Designed in a Spanish Baroque style by Sir John W. Simpson and E.J. Milner Allen. Inside the Central Hall, a large striking room that features a reception desk, a grand organ, and a café.
Kelvingrove is free to enter, making it one of the most popular museums in the UK. It's open daily and easy to reach by public transport, with buses and the nearby Kelvinhall Subway station providing convenient access. If you're arriving by car, there's paid parking available outside the museum on the Kelvingrove Park side of the museum, with further parking across the opposite side of Argyll Street and located half a mile North of the River Clyde, SECC and The Hydro. Sitting to the West of the city centre.
After exploring the galleries, visitors can relax in the café or stroll through Kelvingrove Park, which stretches down to the River Kelvin. The museum is also close to the University of Glasgow and the popular Byres Road area, full of shops, bars, and restaurants.
