Located just north of Edinburgh's city centre, Leith is a vibrant district with a rich maritime history and a growing reputation as one of the capital's coolest neighbourhoods. Featuring in Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh, once a busy port town in its own right and once one of Scotland's main ports before becoming a part of Edinburgh in 1920. Leith has evolved into a modern waterfront area packed with character, culture, and excellent food and drink.
Historically the main port of Edinburgh, playing a key role in Scotland's trade and industry. It retains its historic charm today, with old warehouses, cobbled streets, and a beautiful setting.
In recent decades, Leith has undergone a cultural revival. Artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs have breathed new life into the area, creating a creative hub of independent shops, bars, restaurants, galleries, and unique venues. Now a favourite with locals and visitors, it ranks within the world's top 50 neighbourhoods.
Leith Walk is one of the most iconic streets in Edinburgh. It stretches for about a mile connecting the city centre (starting towards the east end of Princes Street and the top of Leith Street) down to Leith itself, near the Shore. As you walk down, you’ll pass a wide variety of shops, pubs, cafés, and restaurants.
The Royal Yacht Britannia: Permanently docked at Ocean Terminal. Where it made its final journey, this former Royal Ship is now a top-rated visitor attraction in Leith. Step aboard to explore the Queen's former floating palace and see how the Royal Family travelled in style.
The Shore: This scenic part of Leith is lined with colourful buildings, lively pubs, and award-winning restaurants.
Leith Market: Held every Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Offering everything from excellent street food to handmade crafts.
Leith can be reached easily from the centre of Edinburgh. You can walk from Princes Street in about 30–40 minutes or hop on one of the many Lothian Buses that connect the area. Edinburgh Trams also now run all the way to Newhaven, stopping at Ocean Terminal. Connecting Leith with the city centre, St Andrews Square and Edinburgh Airport.
