Montrose is a charming town in Angus, Scotland, and is well worth visiting. Nestled between the North and South Esk Rivers, 30 miles north of Dundee and 40 miles south of Aberdeen. Originally established as a bustling harbour town, it features a beautiful beach and a fascinating history.

The Montrose Basin is a wide, shallow estuary where the River South Esk meets the North Sea. This area is home to the Montrose Basin Nature Reserve. The Scottish Wildlife Trust operates a modern wildlife centre at Rossie Braes, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The basin is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. It’s home to thousands of migratory birds, including pink-footed geese and waders. The visitor centre offers interactive exhibits and panoramic views of the basin.

Montrose has been a significant port town for centuries, with its origins dating back to medieval times. The town’s position on the River South Esk and proximity to the North Sea made it a key location for trade.

You can find The Montrose Museum and Art Gallery and the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre within the town. The House of Dun is just outside the town, with gardens and woodlands to explore. The National Trust for Scotland manages this Georgian mansion and its grounds.

Brechin to the West is home to Brechin Cathedral and the Caledonian Railway, a preserved steam railway. With Arbroath to the south, famous for the Arbroath Abbey and the Arbroath Smokie.
