Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle stands as one of the most important and visually striking castles in Scotland, similar to Edinburgh Castle's position above the city's skyline. With sweeping views across the surrounding countryside, this historic castle has long been a symbol of power.

Stirling Castle has been at the heart of Scotland's history for centuries. It played a central role in Scotland in the Wars of Independence. With Mary, Queen of Scots, crowned here in 1543.

The castle's location near the River Forth made it a vital stronghold, guarding the main route between the Highlands and Lowlands.

Much of what you see today dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries, particularly during the reigns of James IV and James V. Their ambitious building works transformed Stirling Castle.

Highlights Within the Castle Grounds

Visitors can explore an array of restored and richly decorated buildings. The Royal Palace is a standout, with its vivid recreations of how the interiors would have looked during the 1540s. Complete with replicas of royal tapestries and elaborately carved Stirling Heads on the ceilings.

The Great Hall is the largest medieval banqueting hall ever built in Scotland and was used for feasts, ceremonies, and political gatherings. Its distinctive ochre-coloured exterior and hammerbeam roof are striking features.

The Chapel Royal, built by James VI, is another architectural gem that adds to the grandeur of Stirling Castle.
