Stonehaven is a scenic coastal town in Aberdeenshire, known for its stunning beach, harbour and views of the North Sea. What started as a small fishing village grew into a town thanks to the herring industry in the 19th century.
Today, it's a popular destination, attracting visitors to its picturesque waterfront, historical landmarks, and proximity to Aberdeen. Stonehaven's famous Hogmanay fireball ceremony is an event of note and brings in the New Year in Stonehaven.
Well connected by road and rail, sitting on the main Aberdeen to Dundee train line. It is around a 20-minute drive from Aberdeen via the A90, with regular bus and train services, making it an easy day trip and where you will find plenty of things to do.
The charming harbour is where you can enjoy fresh seafood, take boat trips, or soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Stonehaven Beach is a mix of sand and pebbles, with cliffs and rolling hills framing the coastline. A scenic promenade runs along the beach, perfect for walking, cycling, or just enjoying the sea air. The beach links to coastal trails leading towards Dunnottar Castle. Public toilets and parking are available nearby.
Dunnottar Castle is one of Scotland's most iconic ruins. Its dramatic cliff-top Castle has a fascinating history, including protecting the Scottish Crown Jewels from Oliver Cromwell's army, making it well worth visiting.
The Tolbooth Museum is worth discovering. It is located in the town's oldest building by the harbour, and this small museum tells the story of Stonehaven's history. Entry to the museum is free, although donations are welcomed. Please visit the Tolbooth Museum website for up-to-date information on opening times.
Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool is a top attraction in the town. In Scotland, you don't find many outdoor swimming pools! This heated saltwater pool offers a unique outdoor swimming experience, open during the summer months.
A short drive south of Stonehaven is the RSPB Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve, home to thousands of seabirds, including puffins and guillemots which is also easily reachable from Scotland's Granite City, Aberdeen lying just 20 miles south. The city of Dundee, 55 miles to the South via the A90, provides plenty of things to do.
