Located in the south-western corner of Scotland, on the Rhins of Galloway, Stranraer is a coastal town in the district of Wigtownshire. It is part of Dumfries and Galloway, a popular destination for visitors heading to Belfast, Northern Ireland, via the Cairnryan Ferry Port, just five miles north of Stranraer. The Rhins of Galloway has a stunning stretch of coastline, beautiful beaches and coastal walks.
If you're travelling by car, Stranraer is approximately a two-hour drive from Glasgow via the M77 and A77, and around an hour and a half from Dumfries via the A75. The town is built around Loch Ryan with beautiful views down the Sea Loch.
One of the most stunning attractions near Stranraer is Killantringan Lighthouse, which is situated just south-west of the town. This gorgeous gold-and-white lighthouse has stunning views of the Irish seas. It is a must-see when visiting south-west Scotland.
Also worth visiting if you are in Stranraer is Mull of Galloway Lighthouse, Scotland's most Southerly point. The drive to the lighthouse takes around 40 minutes from Stranraer and the last few miles are on single track road, but it is well worth the journey, as it is stunning.
Stranraer is also a great base for exploring other local villages, such as Portpatrick and Port Logan, both beautiful coastal villages.
