The Cobbler, also known as Ben Arthur, is one of Scotland's most distinctive and beloved mountains. Rising to 884 metres, it sits at the head of Loch Long in the Arrochar Alps and is famed for its dramatic, jagged profile. Despite not reaching Munro status, it's a favourite among hillwalkers and climbers in Scotland, providing incredible views of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. The area around The Cobbler is part of the Arrochar Alps, a compact but dramatic range of hills and mountains in Argyll and Bute, just north of Loch Lomond.

The Climb

The walk begins from Succoth car park in Arrochar, following a well-maintained zigzag path through forested slopes. As you ascend, the trail opens into a glen with expansive views of the Arrochar Alps. The route passes the Narnain Boulders, once used as shelters by early climbers, before reaching a path junction. From here, a stone staircase leads to the summit plateau. The actual summit is a rocky pinnacle accessible via a scramble known as "threading the needle," which involves going through a hole in the rock to reach a narrow ledge with significant exposure. This final section is recommended for experienced climbers with a good head for heights. Before starting the climb, please check the weather forecast and wear suitable clothing for the conditions.

Climbing the Cobbler will take 2-3 hours, depending on fitness level, and allow 6 hours for the full walk.

Car Parking

Car parking is available at the Succoth Car Park in Arrochar. Please note that this parking is chargeable per hour.

Getting There

Arrochar is easily accessible by car, around an hour's drive from Glasgow and two hours from Edinburgh. There's also a train station (Arrochar & Tarbet) roughly 40 minutes walk from the start of the climb. Citylink and local buses connect to Arrochar and the local area and beyond.

Nearby Hill Walking

For those seeking a bigger challenge, The Cobbler can be combined with neighbouring Munros like Beinn Narnain (926m) and Beinn Ìme (1,011m) for a full day in the Arrochar Alps with a mix of Corbetts and Munros, making it a perfect base for keen hillwalkers.

Hillwalking options near The Cobbler

Beinn Narnain (926m, Munro)

Directly beside The Cobbler, often climbed on the same day. Steeper and rockier than The Cobbler, with a bit of scrambling near the top with stunning views over Loch Long and down towards Loch Lomond.

Beinn Ìme (1,011m, Munro)

The highest peak in the Arrochar Alps. It can be reached via the bealach (saddle) path between The Cobbler and Beinn Narnain.

Ben Vane (916m, Munro)

Ben Vane is a short drive away, near Inveruglas on Loch Lomond's west shore. Steep, rugged climb with multiple false summits — feels tougher than its height suggests.

Ben Vorlich (Loch Lomond) (943m, Munro)

Just south of Ben Vane, also accessed from Inveruglas or Ardlui. Sweeping views over Loch Lomond, and often a quieter climb than The Cobbler.

Beinn Luibhean (857m, Corbett)

Beinn Luibhean is located between The Cobbler and Beinn Ìme.

Ben Lomond (974m / 3,196 ft)

One of the most climbed Munros in Scotland, located on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, opposite Arrochar. It offers stunning views over Loch Lomond and the surrounding hills.
