On Scotland's Ayrshire coast, Troon is best known for its golden beaches, lively harbour, and famous golf courses. Just north of Prestwick and Ayr, and connected to Glasgow by the M77 road and Glasgow Central Station. Troon is a wonderful town to explore on the Ayrshire coast.
The town's long sandy beach is the main draw, stretching along the seafront with views across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig in the distance. It's perfect for walking, picnics, or enjoying the fresh sea air. On sunny days, the promenade is full of life. Enjoy an ice cream as you walk along the promenade.
Right next to the beach, this large play park is perfect for the kids. With climbing frames, swings, and slides, it's an excellent place for children to burn off some energy while you enjoy the coastal views.
Enjoy some crazy golf at Troon beach, located beside the play park. This crazy golf course is great fun and a great way to top off a family day out at Troon beach. Only open in the summer months.
Fullarton Woods offers a peaceful escape. The woodland walks are popular with dog walkers and families, with several routes weaving through old estate grounds. Look out for local wildlife, and enjoy the calm away from the busy seafront. A kids' play park and toilet facilities are beside the car park.
Troon is home to part of the Smugglers' Trail, a 6-mile walking route that connects Troon to the village of Dundonald, starting or finishing at Dundonald Castle. The trail takes you through varied scenery, from beaches to woodlands, with stunning views over Troon and Royal Troon Golf Course.
Enjoy a day trip from Troon to the Isle of Arran, ferries cross from Troon harbour to Brodick on Arran. Known as "Scotland in Miniature", Arran is packed with mountains, castles, and distilleries, and makes for a fantastic day trip. Check ferry times before leaving, as the timings only give you a few hours on the island.
The Marina is one of the largest on the Clyde coast and is a lively spot to stroll around. Watch yachts come and go, and enjoy fresh seafood at harbour restaurants such as Scotts, which has views of the Marina.
Troon is world-famous for its golf, Royal Troon Golf Club, one of Scotland's most prestigious links, which last hosted The Open Championship in 2024, which was won by Xander Schauffele. Also part of Royal Troon Golf Club is the Portland Course, which again offers a wonderful golfing experience.
Troon Links also has three excellent public courses operated by Golf South Ayrshire. The Lochgreen, Darley, and Fullarton. Lochgreen is the longest of the three courses, with the Darley considered one of the toughest courses in Ayrshire, with small greens and fairways lined with gorse bushes. Fullarton is shorter and more forgiving, making it popular with beginners and those looking for a quicker game.
Just along the coast is Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club, an Open Qualifying venue, which features a championship 18-hole course and a 9-hole course. A friendly Golf Club, serving great food, and making for a great day out.
