Stretching nearly two miles along the North Sea, West Sands Beach in St Andrews is a breathtaking expanse of golden sand backed by rolling dunes and the iconic St Andrews Links golf courses. Just a 15-minute walk from the town centre, this beach offers a serene escape.
The West Sands gained international fame as the filming location for the opening scene of the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. A moment that was later honoured during the 2012 London Olympics torch relay, which was part of the 70-day relay across the UK, cementing the beach's place in cultural history.
The beach is popular spot for walking, jogging, and swimming (on a good day) with separate zones ensuring safety for all visitors. During the summer months, lifeguards are stationed at the beach, making it an extremely safe space. Wheelchair rental is available, promoting inclusivity.
The adjacent sand dunes are part of the Eden Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the Firth of Tay and Eden Estuary Special Area of Conservation (SAC), highlighting the area's ecological value.
